Some people are very talented but don’t have the opportunites to really make it happen. Are you one of them? No problem! If you really want it, you can get it. With the internet, all the information is public and most secrets are revealed. There is even plenty of free information and music production software given away to everyone who needs it. Nothing is better than free sources, right?

You can go to a search engine (google, bing, etc.) and look for free software. You will need an audio editor, like CoolEdit, and some program to arrange your productions. If you already have some hardware (MPC, instruments, etc.), the process will be much easier. Or you might want to take the easy road and get a free demo version of a good music production software to start off. Many features in these free versions aren’t included, but with some effort you’ll be able to make decent sounds. If you aren’t afraid to spend a little money, there are some discounts on full versions so you can make a good deal without spending much. DUBturbo, Sonic Producer or Fruity Loops are some fine programs to begin with.

To educate yourself in music theory, playing instruments or technical understanding, I recommend you to visit your local library. I’m sure you can find something helpful there. Also look for video coachings and tutorials, on YouTube for example. Sign up in forums and share your experiences with other artists and producers. When you’re a little bit experienced, try to participate in beat making contests like on warbeats.com for hip hop beats. If you’re good at making remixes, find a site that will publish your song on their sampler CD, or just produce your own! The opportunities are endless! Maybe you get noticed and your music will be the next big thing out there, who knows…

So, how to get started? Get the software, read and watch the tutorials and make your own experiences. Yes, it’s that easy! How do you think the star producers of today started out? I’m sure their situation wasn’t much different from yours. If you are looking for inspiration, watch some videos from Pharrell or Timbaland working in their studios, it’s really amazing how they rise in the creative moment and forget everything around them.
