Nowadays, the internet offers many opportunities for new young artists to publish their own music and build a fanbase. With YouTube and MySpace, everyone can make music and maybe get noticed by labels and get a deal. But how to get started? This article will show you how you can make your own music on your computer and which software to use for optimum results. Further, I’ll show you some ways to improve you music producing skills.

Finding the right software is the first step and, in my opinion, a very important one. If you are using a program that is too complicated or has a low quality output, it will be very hard to improve your skills. For the start, I recommend you to check out DUBturbo and Fruity Loops. With these programs I have made the best experiences. Try them out and see if they fit your style, music genre and your needs. You might want to download the demo versions first, as you don’t want to spend money on something which might not be the best option for you. There are many more programs out there like Qbase, Adobe Audition or Kristal Audio Engine, just to name a few. They all cost money, but Kristal Audio Engine is free for non-commercial use.

There is no hardware equipment needed, your normal soundcard and some music boxes or good headphones is enough to start with. You can play the sounds on your computer keyboard hitting on the letters and numbers, for more sophisticated melodies a real USB-keyboard is recommended though. An MPC could be a good thing too if you want to make busy and complicated drumlines.

If you are completely new to the music production, you also might want to educate yourself about music theory and structures in your specific genre. You can look for books on this topic or watch tutorials on YouTube. I like the video tutorials more because here you have exact examples which you can hear compared to books where you can only read about it. If you want to produce hip hop and RnB, I want to recommend you to visit the YouTube channel of „nfxbeats“. This really helped me to improve my music.

This is all you need to know when starting out making beats on your computer. Experimenting and gaining experience is key if you are a beginner. When you feel confident enough to take the next step, feel free to read my other articles on music production. I still experiment and try out new things to spice up my music. This is really fun and I never get bored doing this. Let the music inspire you!
